How to Deal with Swollen Knees

Swollen knees may be caused by many things but the most common is twisting and spraining it. Rheumatism also causes knees to swell in elderly people and then there is gout or the forming of uric acid crystals in the joints which leads to inflammation.
In order for you to deal with swollen knees, you need to remember the following letters: R.I.C.E. The letter R stands for Rest. An injured joints needs to be rested after the injury occurred this is to prevent further damage to the muscles and to remove pressure from the injury. The letter I is for Ice, apply ice pack on the injured area for 30 to 40 minutes to relieve the swelling. Repeat the procedure 3 to 4 times a day until swelling subsides. The C stands for compress, compressing the swollen joint will help in relieving the inflammation and will restrict the movement of the injured area. E is for elevate, elevate the injured knee by propping it up with a pillow while lying down. This will allow the accumulated water in the joints to drain thus relieving the swelling of the area.
