DRA Nexus was contracted by Glencore to provide a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) solution for their operation at Tweefontein. With extensive experience in mine water reclamation and ZLD applications, DRA Nexus has constructed a 19,400 m3/day water reclamation plant comprising of a 2-stage RO membrane process with inter-stage softening. The brine stream from the 2 stage RO process is treated in a state-of-the-art eutectic freeze crystallization unit where water is recovered leaving only a solid stream as waste. This process configuration achieves a ZLD status.
A potable water supply of 10,000 m3/day is generated by mineralizing and chlorinating the permeate stream. The product water complies with SANS drinking water standard and is supplied to the local municipality.
The high recovery plant is operated by the DRA Nexus operations team.
Apart from the treatment plant, the project included supporting infrastructure such as water retaining structures, offices, control room, laboratories, change houses, and workshops.
Matla Water Reclamation Plant
Location: South Africa
The project delivered the 10,000 m3/day mine water reclamation plant comprising of a 2-stage membrane process with inter-stage softening to achieve an overall water recovery >96%. The RO permeate is mineralized and chlorinated, complying to the SANS drinking water standard. The plant is operated via an Operations and Maintenance Contract by DRA Nexus.
Early planning and hands on construction management were key to delivering the project in the shortest time possible. The water retaining structures and unit process were prefabricated in our inhouse manufacturing facility and subjected to industry leading quality control procedures and standards before being transported to site. FAT testing of membrane skids and equipment prior to delivery minimized time lost during the construction and commissioning phases.
