After graduating with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Curtin University, I was eager to find a role that would be more than just a desk job. I wanted to be part of an organisation where I could be part of projects that challenged me and apply that knowledge in real-world scenarios to grow both technically and professionally, alongside experienced engineers in the mining and resources sector.
DRA Global stood out to me for its strong presence in mining and minerals processing, both in Australia and internationally, and for the way it supports graduates and junior engineers through structured development and exposure to diverse project work. I was drawn to the opportunity to work on complex projects from various regions of the world and on a diverse range of commodities, all while being mentored by engineers who are passionate about what they do.
Since joining DRA, I’ve had the chance to gain experience in all stages of design work, from scoping studies all the way to final execution and implementation of a design. This has given me a broader understanding of how process engineering decisions impact project outcomes. The supportive culture here at DRA has made a huge difference in my development, by allowing me to build confidence and sharpen my technical judgment through collaboration.
One of the most impactful experiences in my engineering journey was travelling to Namibia to support commissioning activities at the Rosh Pinah Expansion 2.0 Project, the country’s largest zinc mining operation which has been in production since 1969.
Being onsite gave me a front-row seat to the transition from design to operation. From filling and running a tailings thickener, to troubleshooting unexpected issues in real time, every task pushed me to think critically and adapt quickly. It was a steep learning curve, but one that sharpened my understanding of how process design must align with the practical realities of sites.
Working alongside many different teams and disciplines under real-world pressures and tight deadlines taught me the importance of clear communication, adaptability, and teamwork. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for the commissioning process, where small decisions can often have a large impact on safety, performance, and long-term operability.
This opportunity was made possible thanks to the efforts of many, in particular Darren Dalrymple and his team, who welcomed me onboard and provided invaluable onsite exposure. It has not only strengthened my technical foundation but also helped me grow personally, gaining resilience, confidence, and a clearer sense of where I want to take my career in the future. I’m excited to keep building on what I’ve learned as I take on new challenges in the field.
