Assmang Gloria Manganese

Client: Assmang (Pty) Ltd
Location: Northern Cape, South Africa
Period: January 2017, May 2022
Scope: Project Management, Engineering, Procurement, Construction   Management & Commissioning  (EPCM)

Brief Project Overview

In January 2017 DRA was approached by Assmang Limited (Assmang) to commence with the early scoping and initiation activities required for its Black Rock Mine Operations (BRMO) in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The feasibility study aimed to optimise the Gloria Mine surface and underground infrastructure.

To achieve this, a few key objectives were identified namely, optimisation and modernisation of the Gloria mine to provide the flexibility needed to sustain the Life of Mine production expectations through the replacement of underground rock handling infrastructure as well as development of a new surface plant and its associated infrastructure.

Subsequent to the successful completion of the feasibility study, in June 2018 Assmang approved the full project implementation in accordance with DRA’s proposed implementation strategy.

Scope of Work

Services related to the project scope on an EPCM basis are summarised below:

  • Gloria decline conveyor replacement and associated infrastructure (Approx.1km long) – 4 month complete mine shutdown
  • Mining development and equipping of Gloria 74 underground tip and belt conveyors (Approx.1.5km long)
  • Mining development and equipping of Gloria Underground Plant (2 x 1 000 tonnes silo development and central primary crusher)
  • Mining development and equipping of Gloria raise tip and belt conveyors (Approx.1.6km long)
  • Gloria surface plant and associated infrastructure (600tph)

Project Challenges

  • Executing the project in a brownfields environment, allowing minimal operational downtime to integrate the new facilities
  • Total mine shut down for a 4-month period to demolish and rebuild a 1 km long decline conveyor,  completed and handed over 3 weeks ahead of schedule
  • Logistical constraints associated to executing a project in a single barrel entry /exit operational mine

DRA provided Assmang with a complete integrated solution for its Gloria Project, from the mining development and associated infrastructure to the processing plant facilities, seeing the project
through from scoping and concept phases to successful execution.

Key accomplishments to date

  • Successful completion of decline conveyor replacement and associated infrastructure, 3 weeks ahead of schedule of a planned 4-month total mine shutdown – completed April 2019
  • Successful completion of mining development and equipping of Gloria 74 underground tip and belt conveyors (Approx.1.5km long) – completed May 2021
  • Successful completion of Gloria surface plant and associated infrastructure (600tph) – completed October 2021

Unique Features

  • DRA’s has built a longstanding relationship with Assmang and has been their partner of first choice for more than a decade
  • DRA delivered a complete integrated solution from the mining development and associated infrastructure to the processing plant facilities and saw the Gloria project through from scoping and concept phases to execution
  • DRA’s on mine presence further supported the mine’s project and operational team with continuous development and ongoing optimisation projects
