Project description 

Lwala is a new opencast chrome project owned by Samancor, located north of Steelport in the Limpopo Province.

Services provided

DRA Global completed a feasibility study (FS) for the Lwala Project. The FS was initiated for the following reasons:

• To undertake the mine design, planning and production scheduling of the Lwala resource for the development of a new chrome mine;
• To engineer the associated surface and underground infrastructure required to support the new mine;
• To develop a CAPEX, OPEX and SIBC estimate for the LoM. Financial modelling was excluded from the scope of work.

DRA Global conducted the study with in-house resources and made use of specialist sub-consultants for the following packages:

• Hydrogeological Investigation and Numerical Modelling
• Geotechnical Investigations
• Geological Data Base and Drill Core Logging assessment
• Ventilation design and precipitation of cobalt with MgO and residue/effluent disposal
