Riotinto Expansion Project

Client:

Atalaya Mining

Location:

Huelva, Spain

Capacity:

9.5 Mtpa

Scope:

Concentrator & Associated Infrastructure

DRA Global was engaged by EMED Tartessus (EMED) in 2014 to conduct a conceptual level review of the incremental expansion options to increase throughput at its Riotinto Project to above the 5 Mtpa that will be achieved with the current Phase 1 plant refurbishment, resulting in an expansion throughput of 9 Mtpa being selected. This was followed by detailed review of the 5 Mtpa Phase 1 project and Phase 2 expansion works to 9 Mtpa, acting as client representative on behalf of EMED-Tartessus, including all facets of design and project implementation.

This work culminated in DRA Pacific being awarded the detailed design for the 9 Mtpa Phase 2 upgrade, consisting of:

  • Addition of a 7.6MW Primary Ball Mill and 7.6 MW secondary balkl mill
  • Addition of 3 x 100 m3 rougher flotation cells and 2x100m3 cleaner flotation cells to supplement the existing flotation circuit
  • All design work for this project is required to comply with EU codes which DRA

Pacific are verifying in-house

Bringing together the complementary skills and experience of our combined team, DRA were engaged by Atalaya Mining in Spain in 2014 to conduct engineering reviews, scoping study services with the view to restart an existing, dormant process facility. This entailed a value engineering phase which delivered a restart plan with a lower CAPEX, lower OPEX and reduced operational risk when compared to the plan developed by the owner prior to DRA involvement.

DRA was then engaged on rolling upgrades to site for a further five years to 2019. With a strong focus to sourcing and expediting suitable unused, second-hand equipment and building this equipment into the design.

In 2019, DRA delivered the detailed design of all phases and worked as the owner’s engineer throughout construction including site supervision of the 23 MW GMD SAG Mill installation, 2x 7.5 MW Ball Mills, C200 Primary Jaw Crusher, 2200 t/h Overland conveying system, stockpile/reclaim, and additions to the flotation circuit.

DRA Global were initially engaged to provide consulting services on behalf of the client Atalaya Mining. These services comprised review of process design, layouts, major equipment sizing and selection, and making recommendations to optimise the circuit design.

DRA Global were subsequently engaged to provide detailed design of Phases 2 and 3 of the project expansion which included design of a new milling building (7.6MW primary and 6.0MW secondary ball mills) and a new flotation circuit comprising 5 x 100m3 flotation cells and associated ancillaries. Discipline design undertaken by DRA Global included process, concrete, structural steelwork, platework, mechanical equipment, piping and instrumentation – all designed in accordance with European Union codes and standards.

DRA Global were also responsible for managing procurement of the primary and secondary ball mills, five new flotation cells, liner handler, blowers, and associated spares and overseeing the logistics to deliver these packages to site.
